Consider the skills that students need to use on the playground: Predictably, lunch and recess often become flash points for misbehavior, hurt feelings, teasing, and exclusion. The more they write, the more they repeat. So everyone could fit around the table, I paired up the students so they could take turns marking angles on the table.

Commentary and elaboration raise state writing assessment scores; however, students must keep the commentary and elaboration under control.

This program is highly effective remediation for students who truly struggle with writing. If it was correct, they left it alone. Games that end in one student or one team winning and everyone else losing can be crushing for 4th graders and can lead some to shut down for the rest of the day.

I taped up a table, armed students with a whiteboard marker, and let them classify acute, right, obtuse, and straight as many angles as they could.

This multi-paragraph writing model provides a foundation and framework that teachers and schools can continue to build on all year, and even year after year.

Students quickly see that organized writing is not random. Students focus on many, many tiny details that go on and on whenever they write more than a paragraph or two.

There is a built-in method of evaluation that allows teachers and students to objectively evaluate writing progress. We just used some fun washi tape to "draw" lines on our whiteboards.

For example, at the end of a writing unit on poetry, families can come to a poetry slam in which students read selected poems they have written. Remediation, Review, and Results!

Children paid close attention, listening more carefully since there were no pictures to tell the story for them. It can be used in printable form as shown or with the task cards that are included.

Students need reinforcement when they're doing something well "James, I saw you pass the scissors carefully to Tamika, just the way we practiced it" ; frequent reminders "OK everyone, before we start our math projects, let's remember how to pass the scissors carefully" ; and repeated chances to review and practice.
